Search Advocate Training
SEARCH ADVOCATE TRAINING
The role of Search Advocate is intended to further advance OSU’s commitment to equal opportunity principles, affirmative action practices, and diversity values. Search Advocates work to enhance the validity, fairness, and diversity focus in each search process. They help search committees learn to recognize and reduce unconscious, unintentional biases, suggest ways to increase the validity of the standard search process, and focus on ways to enhance diversity throughout the search/selection process. They fulfill this role by sharing information, asking questions, recommending inclusive/affirmative strategies, and consulting with the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access as needed to support effective and inclusive search and selection practices, from development of the position description through integration of the new hire into the unit.
Individuals interested in serving in this role are invited to attend a full-day (9-hour) workshop or a two-part (10 hours total) workshop series developing a framework of practice and exploring the specific issues that may arise at each stage of the search process. Either (1) the full-day workshop, or (2) both Session I and Session II of the two-part series must be completed for you to become eligible to serve as Search Advocate on a university committee. Breakfast and lunch are provided.
After you complete your initial training, you will be eligible for the next 12 months to serve as a search advocate on any search committee outside your own work unit.(if you so choose). Completing the workshop does not require you to serve as an advocate, it merely makes you eligible to serve. You will be eligible to serve as a search advocate for 12 months after completion of EITHER the full day workshop, OR Session I and Session II of the half-day workshop series. To maintain eligibility beyond the first 12 months you must remain current with annual continuing education requirements—this can include (but may not be limited to) attending a 3.5 hour yearly Search Advocate Update workshop, participating in 3 or more learning community lunches, or re-taking the search advocate workshop.
